Charterhouse Match

This match was played at Godalming, July 24th, and resulted in their favour by 78 runs:- They won the toss and went in. Powell and Dames were not separated until 115 was up, the former making 66 the latter 44. After lunch they could make no stand against Wetton and Sandwith, the former bowling slow underhand, the latter ripping fast round; and the innings closed for 147.- On our going to the wickets Higgins batter very steadily, and when he was partnered with Benbow it looked as though we had some chance, but in attempting a short run the latter was given out – a decision which failed to give general satisfaction – and Higgins was shortly after stumped, and the innings closed for 69. We therefore had to follow on and sent Wetton and Sandwith to the wickets, the latter played very steadily for 16, while Dale, Ryde, Benbow and Bain raised the total to 88 for the loss of nine wickets. Score.
