A collection was made on St. John’s Day on behalf of a section of the parish of St. George’s in the East; it amounted to something over 20 pounds. Subsequently a deputation consisting of H. Withars Q.S., C. Bompas T.B., L. James Q.S. & Jarvis T.B., went down one Wednesday afternoon & were shown over the parish.
We were shown into an Opium Den & several mission rooms; we walked about for some time near the docks, coming across about the choicest selection of stinks that it has ever been my lot to fall in with, & were finally treated to tea at which a bear’s ham figured as the piece de resistance. We all had very bad headaches afterwards.
