Batley would have stroked the T.B. Eight but as he did not put in an appearance till about three nights before the race it was out of the question – so Frere who had no colours (and did not even get his pink & whites afterwards which was very hard luck after the way in which he rowed) was put at that thwart. The race was one of the best rowed for several years – after a foul which was chiefly caused by an obstructive barge in the course of the T.B eight the boats were called back and an excellent race ensued. The Q.SS with the Surrey station and much the best of the start went ahead and, when half the course had been completed, had a clean length in hand and looked easy winners. But from that point the T.BB gradually wore them down and spurting pluckily just before the finish came up so fast that their partisans looked forward to a victory. The effort however, splendid as it was, was made too late and though, had the course been 100 yds longer, I have no doubt we should have won yet the Q.SS just managed to pull off the race by a short half length. The T.BB rowed for the first time in splendid caps (white with the monogram TB in blue and gold in the front.
