The Leander Race was rowed on July 16th and resulted in a crushing defeat for the school. Coke, determined to signalize his captaincy in the only way he could think of, had made up his mind not to fill up the Eight; this determination naturally disgusted those fellows who had been ‘wiring up’ for their pinks and one of them (E. Poland T.B) who would have had to suffer considerable personal inconvenience in order to row wrote to Coke declining to row unless the Eight were filled up. This the latter refused to do and so Poland did not row. Squire also could not and Morison could not row – In consequence of these defections the Eight had only been out twice before the race and as the Leander had practised diligently the ‘pink’ of Westminster was left hopelessly in the rear. Our defeat however would not have been by so much as it was (namely three lengths) had Brandon made any real spurt. Our crew was made up as follows –

H.W. Waterfield (bow) Q.S.

  1. C.B. Crews T.B. (Emergency)
  2. W.M. Meredith T.B. (Emergency)
  3. O. Scoones Q.S. (Emergency)
  4. H.T. Clarke Q.S.
  5. W.W. Bury Q.S.
  6. R.H Coke Q.S.

E.T.A. Brandon (stroke) Q.S.

G.G. Phillimore (cox) T.B.

I omitted to state that R.C. Batley T.B. was unable to row
