The Charterhouse match was played “up fields” on Saturday March 3rd before a large crowd of spectators. The weather was ideal and Harris had got the ground as nearly perfect as possible. From the start Charterhouse showed their superiority still owing to the energetic defence of Newman and Rivaz at back and Allen in goal the score stood at “love all” at half time. Up to this time the forwards had got down to the Carthusian goal about 3 times and their goal-keeper had had about half-a dozen shots to stop. Van der Gucht and More putting in a couple of good ones after half-time the defence was broken down as it received but little assistance or rather no assistance at all from four-fifths of the forwards and Charterhouse playing up hard scored six goals in rapid succession. Allen should have saved two of these but their mistakes were fully counterbalanced by the splendid saves he made other occasions; indeed it was only his admirable display that prevented the score from being 16-0 in of 6-0. Newman and Rivaz both played a plucky and energetic game at full back but both were completely out weighted and Rivaz outpaced by the opposing forewards. Beasley was the best of the halves and fully did himself justice til the end of the second half when he was obviously fatigued by his exertions. Griffin was too light and too slow for Davidson who brushed him aside like a fly – sometimes with considerable violence and detriment to Griffin’s personal appearance. The same might be said of Fox in the matter of height but not of speed in fact considering the strain he was suffering from in his leg he played a most plucky game with considerable success – all the half-back play was marred by the utter incapability of four of the forwards to do anything.
Severn made one good run at the beginning and was after that hopeless. Moon lost his head at the start and was a passenger for most of the game. Waterfield seemed paralysed and was a painful object to behold.
Van der Gucht played pluckily but uselessly as he was generally knocked over by Sladen whenever he got the ball. More alone played with any real energy in the second half and did all in his power to redeem the fortune of the game but in vain as he met with absolutely no support from the other forwards —-
For Charterhouse, Lea did what he had to do in goal satisfactorily. Was excellent at back but his partner Garrett was the weaker point in the team several times losing his head and missing his kick. Sladen and Austin were very good at half – All their forwards were good the combination being excellent. Vassall and Jameson being most conspicuous. The result was a great disappointment as the team had been playing very well in the last four matches before Charterhouse. The magnitude of the disaster was utterly due to the helplessness of the forwards.
