The wicket was very fast, so hard in fact that it soon crumbled, and winning the toss was an undoubted advantage. Charterhouse were favoured by fortune and sent in Hancock and Anderson to face Fisher and Probyn.\u00a0 The scoring ruled slow at first, but soon quickened, and it became evident that we were in for some considerable amount of fielding.\u00a0 50 was hoisted in about half an hour\u2019s play and Hancock who scored at a great pace soon reached his 50.\u00a0 Various bowling changes were tried and at last Murray bowled Anderson for 18 out of 77. With W.B.L Barrington in 100 appeared less than an hour\u2019s cricket and the score was fast in spote of upsated variation in the attack.\u00a0 Hancock completed his 100 out of 193 in an hour and three quarters.\u00a0 After lunch 31 were added and then Barrington was run out having made 54 in beautiful style.\u00a0 Wreford-Brown then appear but Hancock did most of the scoring until, with the score at 268 he was clean bowled by Murray for 157. He had played very good cricket and among his hits were four 5\u2019s, fifteen 4\u2019s and ten 3\u2019s.\u00a0 The younger Barrington arrived and the rate of scoring slowed.\u00a0 At 3.30 Whitlow went on and in his first over Barrington was taken at mid-on. With the score unchanged Wreford-Brownwas taken at cover-point\u00a0 by Van der Gucht off More who had resumed at the pavilion end. The wicket was now crumbling and the others gave little trouble the innings closing for 369 in which extras were too prominent a figure.\u00a0 The fielding was quite good.\u00a0 Our innings does not require much description. Moon being unfortunately run out before scoring and at the end of the day the score was 71 for 4 wickets. Van der Gucht having played well for 29. On resuming More adn Beasley put on 52 before being parted. Whitlow caused some trouble, but the rest did little and the venture closed for 173, extras here also being much too prominent. Our follow on began very badly four wickets falling for 28, Moon making 17. Beasley however profting by a life from Mat when had made 4 hit away like a Trojan and More helped him to put on 23.\u00a0 Then Beasley was bowled for an invaluable\u00a0 30, and More shortly followed him.\u00a0 Whittow and Murray save the score from XX and laid about them well for a time but the whole side were out in an hour and three quarters for 130.\u00a0 The defeat was certainly unpleasant, but after the first day we had but little chance.\u00a0 An extraordinary thing was that both Probyn and Fisher failed to obtain a wicket. Probyn was invariably successful afte this match and Fisher did so well against them the year before.\u00a0 We were superior to them in one respect, namely in our fielding which was much clearer.\u00a0 The wicket keeping on both sides was distinctly poor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
