Arthur Penrhyn Stanley D.D. died after a short illness leaving a gap which his successor can only partially fill \u2013 A brilliant writer, an active philanthropist, a great preacher and, above all things, a good man he was the leader and bulwark of the Broad Churchmen and, perhaps, the Greatest Dean Westminster has ever seen.<\/p>\n<p>On July 25<sup>th<\/sup> (St. James Day) he was buried. About 50 T.BB headed the procession which included among the mourners all the noblest names in British politics, science and literature.<\/p>\n<p>In consequence of this loss the Lords and Commons match was not played and Charterhouse was played a week later than usual.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>On July 18th a great man for long intimately connected with the school passed from our midst.
