In Eton College phraseology: to attempt to exhaust the supply of food at a meal, as an expression of dissatisfaction with the fare provided; esp. in the phrase to brosier my dame or my tutor.<br \/>\n1850   N. &#038; Q. 1st Ser. 2 44\/1,   I well remember the phrase, \u2018brozier-my-dame\u2019, signifying to \u2018eat her out of house and home\u2019.<br \/>\n1888   W. Rogers Reminisc. 15,   I joined a conspiracy to \u2018brozier\u2019 him. There were ten or twelve of us [at breakfast], and we devoured everything within reach.<br \/>\n1899   C. K. Paul Memories 111   If a tutor or a dame was suspected of being niggardly, it was determined to \u2018brosier\u2019 him or her.<\/p>\n<p>Brewer&#8217;s states that the root is the Greek verb &#8216;broso&#8217; meaning to eat.<\/p>\n<h2><a name=\"Dame\"><\/a>Dame<\/h2>\n<p>A woman who ran a boarding house.<\/p>\n<h2><a name=\"Homeboarder\"><\/a>Homeboarder<\/h2>\n<p>A pupil who did not board at the school (i.e. who lived at home)<\/p>\n<h2><a name=\"Princeps Oppidanorum\"><\/a>Princeps Oppidanorum\/Princeps Oppidanus\/Prin Op<\/h2>\n<p>Literally &#8216;Prince of the Town&#8217; \u00a0&#8211; a name given to the pupil elected to represent the <a title=\"Glossary\" href=\"http:\/\/townboyledger.westminster.org.uk\/?page_id=7#Town Boys\">Town Boys<\/a> at the school<\/p>\n<h2><a name=\"Scholar\"><\/a>Scholar\/King&#8217;s Scholar (KS)\/Queen&#8217;s Scholar (QS)<\/h2>\n<p>Boys who pass the school&#8217;s challenge examination become King&#8217;s (or Queen&#8217;s depending on the reigning monarch) Scholars.\u00a0 The school&#8217;s statutes provide for 40 scholars and there are consequently usually eight in each year group.\u00a0 The Scholars board in College.<\/p>\n<h2><a name=\"The Sixth\"><\/a>The Sixth<\/h2>\n<p>The most senior form in the school, equivalent to today&#8217;s &#8216;Sixth Form&#8217;.<\/p>\n<h2><a name=\"Town Boys\"><\/a>Town Boys (TB)<\/h2>\n<p>Any pupil at the school who was not a <a title=\"Glossary\" href=\"http:\/\/townboyledger.westminster.org.uk\/?page_id=7#Scholar\">Scholar<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2><a name=\"Usher\"><\/a>Usher<\/h2>\n<p>A teacher who looked after pupils and resided with them in a boarding house.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Broshiering An early instance of the word brosier or brozier which features in the Oxford English Dictionary: 2. trans.
